Oil has recently been discovered in Kenya. There is a lot of jubilation over this discovery, while others lament. The Kenyan government believes that such a discovery will bring about positive change especially an increase in employment opportunities.
Several Kenyan environmentalists are of the view that the oil discovery in the country will accelerate the degradation of the coastal island of Lamu. Residents of Lamu fear that plans for a new port and oil pipeline, could have a negative a environmental impact.
How can we therefore strike a balance between preserving the environment and exploiting the new found oil, in Africa?
